Are you planning a summer getaway in the waters of the Ogden Valley? The Ogden Valley is one of Utah’s best places to go for popular summer recreation activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, and paddleboarding. If your plans include visiting Pineview Reservoir, read on.

U.S. Forest Service construction improvements taking place this year along the western shore will affect parking capacity and travel for vehicles pulling boats and trailers, particularly on SR-158. The Port Boat Ramp Marina, Pineview Trailhead (Windsurfer Beach), and the surrounding areas on the western shore of Pineview Reservoir are fully closed through 2026.

The good news is that there are still open alternatives, including Cemetery Point, Anderson Cove, and Middle Inlet (use fees apply). If you’re looking for free access points, Pelican/Quist Beach and Spring Creek are available with vault restrooms.

What you should know from the Forest Service about the Pineview Reservoir Construction Project

Changes are occurring at the Port Boat Ramp and Pineview Trailhead (Windsurfer Beach) area on the western shores of Pineview Reservoir that will affect visitor access. The purpose of the project is to improve visitor experiences and provide safer access to recreation sites.

Construction is occurring and will continue through 2026. A closure will remain in effect for the project area during the construction period for public safety. No public access will be allowed at any time during construction.

Portions of the Pineview West Trail are also closed.

Anderson Cove Boat Ramp is open with limited parking.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Before you hitch up the boat trailer or load up the car, here is everything you need to know about traveling, parking, and recreating at Pineview Reservoir.

How will construction affect traffic and transportation?

The closures are expected to cause significant traffic shifts. Expect travel delays from lane closures, road widening, and median turn-lane construction on SR-158.

Because the Port Ramp is closed, overflow traffic will be pushed heavily onto SR-39, particularly around Anderson Cove and Cemetery Point, which does not have much queuing space and has limited parking that causes frequent back ups directly to the Huntsville roundabout.

What if the parking lot is full?

With fewer open facilities, Anderson Cove and Cemetery Point are expected to be much busier than usual.

On busy weekends, these lots can reach full capacity by 9 or 10 a.m.

Once a lot is full, Pineview Concessionaires will turn vehicles away. Visitors will not be allowed to line up and wait at the entrance booth. Please avoid parking illegally.

Where can I turn my boat trailer around if I get turned away?

Once you commit to Ogden Canyon or Trappers Loop and parking fills up, there are very few places to safely turn around a vehicle pulling a boat trailer. Please do not attempt to turn around in the middle of the road. If you need to turn around, you have a couple of options:

  • Cemetery Point: Turning around at Cemetery Point is possible, but you should expect to wait up to an hour in line on peak days just to reach the turnaround point.
  • Huntsville Detours: If you are diverted at the toll booth or if you must turn around in Huntsville, the town recommends using 7100 East or 6800 East as the least impactful routes when traffic is backed up. Please avoid circling through the middle of town.

Check the UDOT Ogden Valley website for status updates before heading up the canyon.

Can I park on the street in Huntsville if the lots are full?

No. If parking at Pineview Reservoir is full, visitors should not park on residential streets in Huntsville or leave vehicles where they are not permitted.

Parking restrictions are in effect throughout town, and enforcement is active. Vehicles parked illegally may be cited or towed.

Parking violations can result in a $150 fine, which increases if not paid within 14 days.

What is the fine if I park illegally at Pineview Reservoir?

Parking violations near Pineview Reservoir can result in a $150 citation, which increases if not paid within 14 days.

Illegal parking is a public safety hazard because it blocks emergency vehicles from reaching the water during rescue operations.

The Weber County Sheriff’s Office is dedicating officers to traffic and parking enforcement at Pineview throughout the summer.

How are boat inspections and decontamination being handled during the closure?

Aquatic invasive species boat inspections will be conducted at Anderson Cove and Cemetery Point. Decontamination services will not be available at Pineview this summer (Port Boat Ramp Marina, Anderson Cove, or Cemetery Point).

Currently, the inspection process takes around 5 minutes.

Beginning May 23, 2026, the Utah Department of Natural Resources will offer appointment-based decontaminations Monday through Friday at the Northern Region Office (NRO) located at 515 East 5300 South in South Ogden. Weekend decontaminations will be available at NRO from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning June 6.

What should I expect if I visit Causey Reservoir instead?

Causey Reservoir is another popular Ogden Valley destination, but it can also become very busy on weekends and parking often fills up.

Parking along the dam is strictly prohibited because it blocks emergency response teams from reaching visitors during emergencies.

Road and recreation improvements are underway near the spillway and may limit access at times. Projects in the area include:

  • Repaving the secondary parking area just past the dam
  • Expanding and repaving the Skull Crack Trailhead parking lot
  • Installing a new emergency boat ramp

To help manage the heavy traffic flow, the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will have seasonal staff driving up the road to screen vehicles and conduct decontamination checks before visitors reach the point where there are no turnarounds for trailers.

Construction Breakdown

The popular recreation area was originally developed between 1959 and 1979 and is being updated to improve access and amenities. Improvements are focusing on three areas: Pineview Trailhead, New Point Day Use Area, and Port Boat Ramp.

What is changing at Pineview Trailhead?

The Pineview West trail is an easy gravel trail along the west side of the reservoir that traces the shoreline through various recreational facilities. Here are changes to expect:

  • A new connecting road near the trailhead.
  • New access routes to the beach.
  • A new parking lot.
  • Restrooms, garbage services, and picnic sites.
  • An information kiosk.

What is coming with the New Point Day Use Area?

  • A parking area.
  • Restrooms and access routes.
  • Picnic sites and garbage services.
  • Information kiosks.

How is the Port Boat Ramp being improved?

  • A new road.
  • Fee stations.
  • An aquatic species inspection area.
  • Redesign of traffic flow to reduce conflicts with traffic on State Route 158.
